Anyway. My family had a little gathering in one of my cousins' houses that other day to say goodbye to my aunt who was going back to Italy (she lives there). And to decide 6ab3an 3ala mino bitgi6 her 100 plus kilos of luggage (wallahim3atheem mo sharya shay! 6al!!) and 6 bags. It's a family problem. And naturally my aunts complained about how the only thing we do is eat and how awful we are- while eating kastana (roasted chestnuts), gluten free cheesecake from Firin, crudites, date cake, riz ib 7aleeb, cupcakes, nikhy etc etc. OMG. And everyone complained about how annoying I was taking pictures. Whatevbombs. Love my family, what would I do without them?

I seem to specialize in nonsensical post titles. This was in the lobby of the Ritz Bahrain. Newly redesigned. Gorge-balls. The Overdressed arrived in a tangerine-coloured accordion skirt and her white patent Sergios, Prada snake in tow. Brought her extra vanilla truffles from November and a bunch of baked goods including saffron squares, squillionaires, pecan bars, cookies, pistachio stuff and I don't remember what else. Pistachio is my favourite truffle. What's yours? November is the best! YAAAY.

The Overdressed, unlike ME, takes a very French approach to shopping.

1. She knows her style: lace, clean long lines, florals, slim cuts, evening embellishment.

2. She buys quality: things that don't last long don't have a place in The Overdressed Closet. She only buys simple, choice basics from Zara, H&M and Topshop, to be complemented by her elegantly worked blouses, Easter-y pumps and chiffon maxi skirts.

3. She keeps her selection manageable: Unlike some hoarders I know (you all know I'm talking about myself), The Overdressed understands the value of a regular spring clean. She keeps her selection well-edited and manageable. She doesn't buy things that would sit bunched in the back of her closet anyway.

4. She buys things that she gets good use out of: classic cut heels, multi-use dress-up/down skirts and tops and beautiful snakeskin square bags from Prada (love).

5. She knows her weaknesses: EVENING DRESSES and jewellery. And splurges accordingly. Choose one or two areas to splurge, don't suddenly develop an obsessession with early Victorian mourning (ya3ni widows') jewellery and max out you credit card at Grey's Antique Market, or reason with yourself that the merits of buying a Fendi mink-trimmed umbrella far outweigh the negatives (what are you? Lil' Kim??). Then be pissed off cause you could have bought a pair of Jimmy Choo Edna boots with that money. Or.. food, actually. For a week.

Saying goodbye to one of my cousins who was going back to uni in the Tundra. SO SAD. But explaining the title: in the 80s my mum and all my aunts and uncles went to Mexico in the winter time. While they were swimming in the pool, my mother said she saw this gigantic yellow snake slip into it without a sound. Alarmed, she alerted the lifeguard and they evacuated everyone. Mama saved the day, again! Anyway, they ended up with amazing tans and went back to London (my mother did her PhD there) and she kept telling me how they kept getting odd stares at the contradictory look of deep tans paired with fur coats. Hello, that sounds fab to me! Plus mashallah 3alaihom my mother and aunts and uncles were all extremely attractive when they were young and throw their "exotic" looks in the mix and you have a heavenly combination of sun, glow, fur, glam and coconut-scented tanning oil- in the winter. Ever since I heard that story I've just been fascinated by that idea of a snake quietly slipping into a shining blue pool filled with tanned bodies against a backdrop of riotous flowers. I get this strongly frangipani-scented, oversaturated image in my mind of a perfectly framed turquoise pool ripe with a distinctly glamorous brand of danger. I wanted to transmute that aesthetic into a winter outfit. So here you go!

Also, don't you just love my Valentino-obsessed aunt's boots and shirt? The sleeves are amazing and the blouse had a wing-back. So elegant.

Spring Flows: Thrift Shopping With the Cousines

I should actually call this post Laugh At G. Because that's what they did practically every time I came out of the changing room. I ended up buying that Nina Ricci crazy nineties boxy floral dress and jacket they thought were hilarious so take that! I'm gona alter it. This was my first time at Spring Flows' new location in Shuweikh next to Tilal. I thought the selection was slightly smaller this time but I enjoyed it immensely. Cousin G tried on a padded silver waistcoat with matching boxy shiny padded silver jacket and needless to say she looked like a FREAK. From outer space. Hahahah. They had lovely printed items though. Plenty of Irani/Afghani/Maroccan style jackets and home coats. They had tons of superb blazers and boleros as usual (T got this oyster Yves Saint Laurent one). I spotted a really cool Dries Van Noten dress going for a song! Although I am super OCD about shoes, lots of the Sergios and Chanels looked unworn! Also, DISASTER. I tried on this set of cashmere body and dungarees by Laura Biagotti (imaging myself with a decent body) and ended up looking like.... (according toT) an albino version of Super Mario. Enough said. She was crying by the time she was done taking pictures of me which will NEVER end up on the blog thanks very much! I love thrift shopping in Kuwait! Walked away with a whole bag of stuff I am very happy with from our only vintage/charity (all proceeds go to a children's hospital)/thrift shop! If any of y'all know of another one let me know! I'll go exploring.

I was so happy to see my friend Sabrina from Paris a few months ago. I was on my phone on Facebook and was like WAIT Sabreens is in NY? And she was like ya just til tmrw so naturally I had a "family emergency", skipped class and hopped on the train. We met at Prada Soho (of course), where I bought my blue faux fur clutch and made her try the most insanely cool elbow-length gloves with emerald faux fur all up the arms (matched her emerald Nightingale). Then we went to Rice to Riches, only the best rice pudding shop EVER IN THE UNIVERSE. Then the Highline, where Sabrina couldn't stop taking pictures of this abnormally cute asian baby dressed like a candy corn oh my God so cute!

So this post has LITERALLY been delayed for years. Anastasia Radevitch. Where do I begin? Absolutely Phe.no.me.nal! Would you take a look at that insane, physics-defying organic steel squiggle of a heel? Those vicious skater platforms? The FIBRE-OPTICS in the suede of the bootie? This is not a shoe... it's a dream! Radevitch is an extremely talented Canadian designer and it took me a very long time to manage to get a hold of her to ask how I could possibly procure these beauties. Turns out there is a massive waiting list. To save you the time and trouble, this collection costs between 1300- 1800 Canadian Dollars (made to order) depending on the model. If I recall correctly.

When I was at LifeCo for my detox in Bodrum, Turkey last spring I used to take a 1 hour run/walk up the hills every day to clean out my system and keep active. The sights from the top were stunning every single time. The hills were always hazy and and the sea glimmering softly in the most magnificent way. Plus the landscape is carved so sensuously you cannot help but be drawn to it.

Headphones in the air. Or something. I just bought unnecessarily blingy headphones for the gym today while thinking about how much I want Oscar de la Renta's bordeaux fox fur headphones, when I saw the tweet for these Prada headphones by Thouq. Of course the Prada travel range (who debuted a Prada adapter kit a few years ago) would jump on the opportunity to profit off the major trender of the past 3 years: designer headphones. Since everyone and their grandma has Beats now, those with more Alitalia-business-traveller Euro taste can satisfy their need to distinguish themselves by purchasing a pair of "discreet-yet-obviously designer" Pradaphones.

This coming from a Prada FANATIC: I'd take the Oscars any day. My Euro taste bends more towards nouveaux-riche-Muscovite-St.Moritz glamorama than Mr. Frankfurt-to-Zurich. Just sayin'.

No One Does Legs and Leather Like the Italians

I am disastrously picky with the flat boots I buy. The proportions have to be perfect, the cut just slim enough to make your boots the elegant flourish elevating your outfit but just loose enough so they are not scrunchy. The leather must be treated to flawlessness and the colour must be rich and deep. The zipper MUST be concealed and the cut relatively slim. This is why I personally never buy boots except from Jimmy Choo because honestly boots are the most important winter piece and the Jimmy cut corrects every look. Plus they are super comfy. I once bought a non-Jimmy pair in Paris. Needless to say whatamistake and they didn't last a day. I gave them to our housekeeper's Church group I was so angry that I went against my better judgement.

Anyway, the point is.. I saw my cousin wearing these gorgeous slight-wedge Giuseppe Zanotti boots today and fell in love. Front seam. Slim cut, NO protuberant edges.... everything! Gorgeous! There may be a world of perfection (in flat leather boots) beyond Jimmy. Who knew?

Happy Family Buy Expensive Psycho Ice-Skater Boots

Today I was at Mojama3 Munira opposite Marks and Spencer to get some iPhone covers and spotted a shoe shop called Happy Family. I've always wanted to explore the innards of those crazy shoe shops in Salmiya, with their gigantonormous metallic turquoise stripper heels and liberal attitude towards the use of BLING. This was my chance. I spotted these huge sparkle boots that very clearly "inspired" by Shoosh's monstrous Gianmarco Lorenzi psycho ice-skater heels. I immediately felt an all-consuming desire to own them, to wear them with a Union Jack minidress and pretend I was Geri Halliwell, to gleefully make an entrance at Cocoa Room in them with my giant silver fox and be like BAM! What you got?

And then I asked how much they were. 110 KD. WHAT. For Salmiya shoes? SALMIYA shoes. I am so confused. I thought they were supposed to be max 13.5-and-you-can-bargain. Apparently I'm behind the times and its perfectly normal to pick up a pair of SALMIYA shoes for the price of Prada 5 years ago. What is happening to the world?

And I actually wanted them.

New Years. 7 Girls. One Tent.

Not in the "mokhayamat" excuse me! New Years is a wonderful time when you break bread with the good and the loved... bla bla bla. Usually my family throws a big new years party but due to circumstances over which we had no control, didn't happen this year. New Years was spent in T's chalet where we kind of waited around in the tent stuffing our faces with Caesars hotdog rolls (wish Overdressed was there to snatch them from my mouth) and surrounded by mounds of Wow and November until someone realized "OMG YOU GUYS ITS 3 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT". T was almost asleep but we took her car hostage and began shuffling our iPods on full blast and had a party of sorts. And after we had our fill of ridiculous antics (there was a Co-op 3arabana and rooftop jamming involved), we sat around and talked until 5 in the morning about goodness knows what. All in all a wonderful start to 2012 with wonderful people and too many mo3ajanat!

Post New Years: The First Day of '12 Starbucks Vintage Car Weirdness

Slept at 6 in the morning. Pulled a bunch of muscles. Woke up at 9 and decided to get some hideously sugary drink from the chalet Starbucks with T and cruise around in her wildly unsafe, sputtering yet strikingly pretty 1950s Mercedes while listening to 88.8 athan frog sounds. Face: Snowman/panda. Covered under: Loro Piana XXL blanket cardi. Saw a bunch of old school friends and many many more people I know (of course), on the day when you least want to be seen (look like an plastic bag filled with oatmeal.) Then went cruising again to Starbucks in a normal car and here are the pics. And please look at the raven snake on that PS1. INSANE. Pictures of the also kind of nuts night before coming soon. As for now, I'm going to pass out. Merci.

My aunts just came back from Seoul from this alternative healing center and were raving about the Korean fashion scene, something I had read of for a long time (most recently in Pop) but never really managed to explore sufficiently. I just discovered this Korean brand called Pushbutton. So. Cool. Austere lines. Long, boxy, tailored wonderfulness in wools, cashmeres, polyester and bright bright red and dalmation faux furs. I am in love. Hopefully this stuff doesn't come in Asian sizes.

One of my favourite style blogs. Taghrid is an American Apparel model whose mousy hair and soft, rounded features match her pale, withered pastel look. All her shots are very atmospheric. They conjure up a mood and are not just "look at these products", which I love. Her shots are filled with downy mohair, washed mint green and fromage frais, lemon chiffon nighties with large pink woolly blanket coats. The colour schemes (im obsessed with colour, can you tell?) only confirm her impeccable taste.

Remember how I desperately wanted that Chloe snake print skirt a million years ago? Well, I did. And that was before I discovered it was, like, a million KD even on sale. So I ran to TopShop yesterday after seeing Confash's "Just Like Chloe" post about the lookalike skirt and showed the staff Confash's picture on my phone after I couldn't find it and they found it for me. We really underestimate how much blogs and this new generation of Tweeting, Facebooking, Tumblring, forum-participating and Flickring fashion enthusiasts have changed our shopping habits and how we view fashion. They really have. Nowadays, I never buy anything I don't love to bits because I know exactly what my alternatives are and where to get them. Daily Candy tells me when I should do my work in advance and go to New York (Opening Ceremony sample sale) or what restaurants are new in San Franciso, Confashions tells me where I can find a dupe for my favourite Chloe skirt, the Fashion Spot forum tells me what issue Claire Courtin was in Vogue, my own blog puts me in contact with Finsk, one of my favourite shoe brands, Overdressed tells me what she thinks of my new fur dress and asks me what colour Ednas she should get, Tavi seeps into my mood. Fashion today is better than it ever was. It has become so fluid and built on an exchange of ideas across all levels of society. It is no longer projected from above. Student street style in Tokyo can impact a major collection and make some accessories designer an Etsy superstar. Gaga no longer has to respond to the Establishment's taste in fashion when she has that many Twitter fans obsessed with her latest mix of bondage wear and Spanish mantilla. All the lovers (Kylie song) have come forth and are blowing up the internet styleoscape and I LOVE it!!

About the skirt. Not as silky and pretty as the Chloe of course but I still think it is beaaautiful!

Christmas Dinner: Russian Style

Who's stupid? Who's stupid? ME. I forgot to take pictures of the actual dinner. Seriously. That's probs cause I'm on Lina and Dina meal delivery right now and only savoured a few morsels. Whatevs. My aunt and cousin made us an amazing Christmas dinner like every year. Lamb with mint sauce (there is an actual turkey shortage and one company apparently somehow managed to buy some and resell it for the price of gold!), chicken roulade, lentil salad, goat cheese pastry puffs with roasted bell peppers, grilled endive, caulifower gratin, mashed potatoes, a bunch of stuff I can't recall and desserts which included orange pudding, marron glace biscuit cake, a christmas log and berry coulis. Amazing!! Happy time with a small collection of the fam.

Anyway:

Me, berry clafoutis with custard, my Valentino-obsessed aunt's favourite skintight ankle boots with bows, toots, her funny shoes (she adds straps to all her shoes so they dont fall off! haha), leopard and fire-engine red, gold phones and swampy furs, chin and orchid.

Green Land. Soug Al Mubarakia

Hands down the absolute best best best vegetarian Indian food in K. I've been going to this place for four years now and I absolutely love it! Freshest ingredients, perfect spicing and just all round amazing food. My favourite dishes are the rangoli subzi masala (the orange stuff), masala dosa (pictured first), their thalis and diwani handi. I highly recommend you finish your meal off with a mango or fruit lassi. Amazing. Sorry for the crappy pics but I was too hungry to take legit ones. They are located exactly opposite of ABK building in the City on the money exchangers street (entrance to soug al bshoot). Then when we left I saw Afoukado! Hahah. It was on the banner for this really good juice stand while walking back to the parking lot.

It was my cousin's 23rd birthday yesterday and we all got together to celebrate with a casual birthday dinner party. The set up was so much nicer if you could see it in real life. Everything tasted amazing of course (plug November and our friend's cook) and the Caspari christmas crackers we got from November were one of my favourite parts. That, and the Avicii. And my cousin's getting angry because my music wasn't mainstream enough. (Eye roll)

I'm kind of obsessed with the girl on top. The hair, the wet-look leggings, the speckled grey poncho with thick fringing shot through with cobalt, paired with an even woolier red and black chequered mega-scarf and do I even need to mention her "extra-cool" (French accent) dorky-amazing sock-top Chanel combat boots? Moving on... Boys were looking sharp. Girls were on a Birkinfesto. But in their defence, I did spot one (pictured) Kells. Loved the colours. All of them. And the Wang Prisma/Marion/Something clutch held by the girl with the grey gilet and the swatch ring. And admire the lavender meringues, and Marwa, and that goooooorgeous fuschia/purple on forest green.

Tonight I attended Pieces by Farah, the exhibition of furniture and home accessories designed by Farah Al Humaidhi. Fabulous stuff. The "C" table with the green cutout metal piece along with the other side tables were superchic-remastered-60's-designer-office-vibing. Stick a bunch of large pots of lush, verdant tropical plants next to them and bam! Tom Ford but cooler! The star of the show was the curved table with the resin/latex/acrylic covered lace fabric-it's solid. I especially loved the lace-covered lamps. I would love to have a ton and put them all together on a vintage mirrored table in an empty bedroom (one lonely stark white king bed) where they can be the only source of (empty, fractured, moody) light! Loviiiing!

Crunch-time Blues

Due to an unfortunate delay in my flight booking, i am now irritatingly faced with an ungenerous baggage policy and my Qatar airways silver card can do nothing about it (no extra weight on transatlantic flights. How inconvenient). I just realized I am 20 kg overweight and have to take out my brand new Jimmy Ednas, my favourite orange faux fur gilet, a bunch of books (always the problem), my legendary YSL cage boots, the studded delicate Louboutins (again!), a bunch of white shirts (okay maybe i dont exactly need 7), my old and beautiful balloon sleeved Marni light wool coat (sob), my Georgina Goodman lizard platforms, my favourite cherry mens cashmere sweater, scarves, my hiking pants (fine, i probably dont need hiking pants in Kuwait), my Finsk booties (waaaah), my Toga carpet skirt, my MiuMiu tiger ankle-length skirt among others (this is heartbreaking) my inhaler even! I just want to kick noisy things and wail like a baby right now this is so awful. You take my shoes, you take my clothes, you take my books, you take my INHALER... take my LIFE ba3ad!!!! God! This sucks.

The Un-Elitist Nature of Fashionlove

Yesterday a friend of mine was arguing that fashion is essentially elite in nature. Naturally, I agreed that to contort materials and engineer them into an artistic vision costs money, but I did not think that love of fashion was by nature exclusive, that it shut people out or was a social stratifier. Good taste can be satisfied for nothing at all. For the first time in the US, I randomly ended up thrifting with a few friends at Savers (seriously, that's the name of that thrift/charity supermarket) and found some incredibly elegant pieces in unused condition that I would honestly would totally have bought at designer prices. One example is this 80s-fab officewear suit that I got for styrofoam peanuts! I felt like I was an extra on Dynasty (fave show of all time)! The suit is cut incredibly well. It moves wonderfully and the proportions are just right. You don't have to either wear $7000 worth of Celine all the time or wear ill-fitting thrift finds and look like every other "indie-alternative-clothes-are-memories(with mothballs)" type you see on a college campus. The secret is knowing how to shop and having enough Naomi to work it!

Nothing revolutionary, but nothing Versace - Donatella not Gianni- is, really. It's more about clothing a certain type of glamourista with a certain type of lifestyle. Heavy on the Porto Cervo and St. Trop. This berry print is light and happy, and fashioned in the slim-cut, high-heeled Versace style, it becomes exciting. Hopefully I will actually be able to get something this time.

Chris Kane Resort. Ahhhhhh..... Incredible, as usual. I was recently infuriated by a comment a friend of mine made that Chris has no longevity as a designer. Really? Aside from Mary Katrantzou, I cannot think of a SINGLE designer with as much imagination, skill and boldness (not in an "avanteGagarde" way but with a much more interesting weirdness). He continuously puts out collections that are utterly game-changing. He lets no technical difficulty (sheer aluminium with flowers sandwiched in between? Liquid gel on shirt collars?) stand in his way. His ceaseless reinterpretation of the beautiful aesthetic is on par with Prada (and coming from the world's #1 Prada fanatic, that is HUGE). He keeps it fresh while keeping it Kane.

Look at this collection for example. Prismatic rainbow colours and lace. No one puts those two together, yet they look clean, slick and wearable, lovely, happy, 1000% desirable. The slim-cut yet breezy outfits are finished off with a typical Kane shoe: shock yet simple. The last outfit is exquisite. He added depth to the two-dimensional lace of the flared pant with black mesh in the background instead of white. The lace itself has this popcornish, digital quality to it. The top is beautifully detailed with a simple frontal design and soft butter-yellow staining. It is all framed with a canary cardigan worn as a cape. As opposed to the perfectly constructed, overly-abstracted, narcissistic feel I get from the new New Yorkers, London gives me total authenticity, passion and optimism. And Kane leads the pack.

I forgot what exactly she was referring to but one day Shoosh was trying to say that something was rare or whatever. I remember that what she was getting at abadan ma kan la shighil ib what she actually said.

have nothing to do with what she wanted to say, Shoosh saw fit to combine the two into:

Crazy Friends Voodoo

Let me explain N. When I met this best friend of mine, she was a polo and cargo-short-wearing, puma-loving tomboy who saw life through fluorescent-rimmed glasses. One day, she asked me to take her to Villa Moda for a bit of a makeover. We shopped. And shopped. And shopped. That day, I confess, ruined her life. She is currently the most insane, most pathological, most utterly derailed oniomaniac I have ever seen in my life (and by God I have seen a few!)!! I take responsibility! It was my fault! Don't judge me please!

Anyway, she has a Louboutin collection (not to mention her other shoes) that can easily serve as a down payment for Mar-A-Lago. She just sent me a pic of these Voodoo loafers. I love them, they are so Savage-Club-"oriental"-ceremony appropriate!

And being the good friend that I am, N has me currently on an insane goose chase over these Louboutin silver glitter spike rollergirl loafers. I have literally called:

- Mexico

- Australia

- The Dominican Republic

I went to NY for the Opening Ceremony sample sale yesterday (and was the FIRST in line!) and after precariously balancing piles of Versus neon dresses, pastel-stained shirts and Markus Lupfer corseted knits, I settled on three fabulous pieces.

Top. Extreeemely heavy fisherman's crop sweater by Opening Ceremony. See-through lace trousers from Rodarte X Opening Ceremony

Bottom. wait for this... Toga weasel DRESS with detachable fox fur sleeves. No one knew what it was hanging on the rack but it looked fab so I just grabbed it and tried it on and upon discovering it was a dress (and looked a million bucks) I barged up to the till and promptly claimed it as my own!

One more felicitous pronouncement: I finally wore in my Robert Clergerie velvet lace-up boots so they don't hurt anymore!

One more more felicitous pronoucement: Chanel finally gave me my bag back from repairs!! And it's perfect!

Not so felicitous: Imagine the irony: I was sitting at the train station with my Prada backpack, Loro Piana clothes, Chanel bag and bloody fur dress without enough money to take a taxi home.
